A drum corp quickstep of the famed New York 7th Military Regiment. The arrival of this unit in Washington on April 25, 1861, was an occassion of great rejoicing in the capital for it was the first complete regiment to arrive in response to the President’s call for the troops. Washington was in an hostile area to the union and the safety of the capital was thoght to be in jeopardy. The relief displayed by the citizens upon the arrival of the 7th was understandable. The Regiment marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to enthusiastic cheers. The march was the first selection played on the White House Grounds.
